What should I do if my toilet won't flush but is not clogged?

If your toilet won’t flush and there’s no clog, the tank likely isn’t refilling or the flush parts need adjustment. Make these quick checks:

  • Open the shutoff valve fully (turn counterclockwise).
  • Lift the tank lid. Water should be about 1 inch below the overflow tube.
  • Untangle or shorten the flapper chain so it has slight slack.
  • Make sure the flapper seals the drain.
  • Clean or replace the fill valve if the tank refills slowly.
  • In hard-water areas, clean the rim/jet holes to restore flush force.
